Connecting the Transgender Community to Gender-Affirming Care

TransConThe Care Resource team was out in full force during the Aqua Foundation’s TransCon 2023 on Saturday, September 9, 2023, at the Scott Galvin Community Center in North Miami. TransCon is the state of Florida’s only conference by and for transgender and nonbinary people.

The conference’s objective was to connect the transgender community to resources and aid attendees in confronting an array of challenges that may exist including Health and well-being, Education/Self-Growth, and Employment/Entrepreneurship.

Dr. Sheryl Zayas led a workshop titled “Managing Transgender Medical Care Under the New Rules.” During this workshop, attendees gained insights into the complexities of transgender healthcare and learned practical strategies for overcoming barriers created by recent changes.

“Every person who seeks health care should be affirmed, respected, understood, and not feel judged. Finding a knowledgeable, ‘trans-positive’ service provider… one who understands and supports the identity of individuals of transgender experience is extremely important in ensuring they receive proper care. Care Resource’s gender-affirming model of care affirms diversity in gender identity and assists individuals in defining, exploring, and actualizing their gender identity, allowing for exploration without judgments or assumptions.”

Care Resource’s Project STrenGth team was also present during TransCon to further bridge the gaps for transgender individuals in accessing support and healthcare services in Broward and Miami-Dade counties.

Project sTrenGth hopes to address health disparities, by providing safe, affordable, and quality gender-affirming health care. Some gender-affirming services include clinical STI screenings, Pap tests, breast exams, and prostate cancer screenings.
