Raising Awareness During STI Awareness Month: Combating the Rising Rates in Florida

Throughout STI Awareness Month in April, Care Resource is further raising awareness about sexually transmitted infections and safeguarding one’s sexual health. Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) continue to pose a significant public health concern affecting millions of individuals annually. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) as of 2022, the impact of STIs in the US remains substantial.

There were 1,649,716 reported cases of chlamydia, 648,056 reported cases of gonorrhea, and 203,500 reported cases of syphilis. These statistics underscore the urgent need for effective prevention strategies. Those between the ages of 15-24 accounted for almost half of the newly reported STIs inclusive of HPV, herpes, trichomoniasis, chlamydia, HIV, gonorrhea, syphilis, and hepatitis.

Throughout April, patients who are uninsured and test positive for an STI at one of our health centers may qualify for a no cost doctor’s visit.* Please speak to a Health Promotion Testing Counselor, or call 305.576.1234 for more information.

Many STIs are curable and all STIs are treatable. Treatment for an STI can also help reduce the possibility of passing the infection on to a partner. It’s best to discover and treat any infections as early as possible, to avoid any other health issues. One promising preventive treatment is doxycycline post-exposure prophylaxis (DoxyPEP). This regimen involves taking a course of doxycycline antibiotics within 72 hours of potential STI exposure.

“DoxyPEP stands as a powerful tool in the fight against STIs. While it’s essential to acknowledge its limitations and consult healthcare providers for personalized guidance, DoxyPEP offers significant potential in safeguarding sexual health. Reach out to your doctor to learn more about DoxyPEP and see if it’s suitable for you.” – Douglas Steele, Director of Medical Care Services.
