Transgender Awareness Month 2020

Care Resource Celebrates Transgender Wellness

This November, Care Resource is observing Transgender Awareness Month, a time to uplift the voices and diverse experiences of transgender and gender non-conforming people. This month provides our health center with a key opportunity to celebrate the progress made for transgender rights and recommit to ending health disparities still faced by transgender people.

Transgender Day of RemembranceWhile our medical providers support transgender patients on their unique path of transition or gender affirmation, our health center values the health of the whole person. Care Resource offers comprehensive primary care services for all. Patients can also access supportive behavioral health services, case managers who are knowledgeable about transgender issues, and safe referrals to ancillary services, including surgical support or speech therapy.

In order to address specific needs, Care Resource offers a voucher program for new, transgender patients who would like to begin Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT). This voucher provides a basic exam, initial labs to prepare for HRT, and a follow-up visit to receive lab results. To schedule an onsite or telehealth appointment, patients can call 305.576.1234 or click here to Pre-Register online.

Most importantly, every member of our Care Resource team works to create a safe space for transgender patients. It essential that transgender patients feel comfortable, validated, and understood.

Dr. Ben Hersh, Primary Care Physician at Care Resource, states “According to a study done by the U.S. Transgender Survey, one in four transgender individuals didn’t seek necessary healthcare because they were afraid of interacting with the healthcare system. At Care Resource, we make sure our patients feel safe, welcome, and acknowledged at every step of their experience. A comprehensive approach can put these patients at ease: acknowledging their gender identity, using the correct personal gender pronouns (PGPs)—many patients have never experienced that in a health center.  We have to acknowledge that each of our patients has their own story and remember this in all of our interactions with them.”

In order to learn more from about Care Resource’s sensitive care for the transgender community, watch the video below. Dr. Ben Hersh and Myka Osorio, PrEP Navigator and Trans Advocate, discuss the health center’s comprehensive healthcare for the transgender community.
