Measles and Vaccination: Protect Your Health Today
The measles are an important health issue that we want to focus on. At Care Resource, we’re dedicated to keeping our community safe.
Recently, there’s been an increase in measles cases across the United States, including right here in Florida.
A recent case of measles was confirmed in Miami-Dade County at Miami Palmetto Senior High School. With measles being highly contagious, it’s crucial to take the necessary steps to protect yourself and those around you.
What is Measles and Why Should You Care?
According to the (CDC), measles is a viral infection that spreads easily through the air when someone infected coughs or sneezes.
The symptoms start with a high fever, dry cough, runny nose, and red, watery eyes.
A few days later, a red rash appears, starting on the face and spreading down the body.
While measles may seem like a thing of the past, outbreaks are still a real concern, especially for those who haven’t been vaccinated.
Measles isn’t just a rash—it can lead to severe complications, like pneumonia, brain swelling, and even death.
The good news? It’s preventable with the MMR vaccine (measles, mumps, rubella).
Getting vaccinated is the best way to protect yourself, your family, and our community.
Who’s Most at Risk?
While anyone can get measles if they aren’t vaccinated, some groups are more susceptible:
- Unvaccinated individuals: People who haven’t received the MMR vaccine are at higher risk.
- Infants and young children: Especially those under 5 who haven’t completed their vaccine series.
- Pregnant women: Measles during pregnancy can cause serious complications, such as miscarriage or premature birth.
- People with weakened immune systems: Those living with HIV/AIDS or those taking immunosuppressant medications are at higher risk of severe illness.
How Can You Protect Yourself and Others?
The best way to prevent measles is through vaccination. Here’s what you can do to stay safe:
- Get vaccinated: Ensure your MMR vaccine is up to date. If you’re not sure, please reach out to us for guidance.
- Practice good hygiene: Wash your hands regularly with soap and water, or use hand sanitizer when you can’t wash.
- Follow good respiratory etiquette: Always cover your mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing, and encourage others to do the same.
- Stay informed: Keep up to date with the latest guidance from the CDC and Florida Department of Health.
