Beatriz Maria “Betty” de la Sierra remains an inspiring Betty de la Sierra HIV advocate whose commitment to education, compassion, and HIV awareness continues to impact communities today. Although her life was cut short, the people she touched and the organization established in her memory continue advancing her mission.
A Personal Journey That Inspired Advocacy
As a young woman, Betty moved to Japan in 1990 to teach English and explore the world. While there, she entered her first serious relationship and unknowingly contracted HIV.
After becoming ill and returning to the United States, she endured a lengthy search for answers before receiving an HIV diagnosis. At the time, many healthcare providers overlooked the possibility that someone like Betty could be at risk. As a result, her experience highlighted the stigma and misconceptions surrounding HIV during that era.
Rather than allowing her diagnosis to define her, Betty chose to educate and empower others. After moving to New York City in 1992, she visited schools and spoke openly with students about HIV prevention, personal responsibility, and informed health decisions.
Her message was simple yet powerful: HIV does not discriminate, and awareness can save lives.

Continuing Betty’s Mission
In July 2002, Betty passed away at the age of 34, only days after blessing her union with the love of her life, Erick. However, her mission did not end.
Inspired by her commitment to HIV education and awareness, her mother, Alina Pedroso, her sister, Alina Murphy, and her twin brother, Rafael de la Sierra, continued sharing Betty’s story with communities across the country.
To carry her legacy forward, Betty’s family established Betty’s AIDS Education, a nonprofit organization dedicated to HIV/AIDS education, awareness, and healthcare initiatives.
