A Community Focus
Every year, National Youth HIV & AIDS Awareness Day gives us the chance to focus on the health of young people when it comes to HIV and AIDS. This is more than just a day—it’s a reminder of how much work is still needed to ensure every young person is informed, supported, and has access to the resources they need to protect their health.
“Today’s youth are navigating their identities and bodies with increasingly limited access to reliable information and guidance. Raising awareness about STIs and HIV/AIDS is vital in both protecting and empowering those who are at risk while also nurturing the incredible potential for greatness within them.” -Wallace Cure, Health Promotion Peer Navigator
Why Should We Care?
While the overall rate of new HIV diagnoses has declined over the years, young people—especially those between the ages of 13 and 24—are still disproportionately affected. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), adolescents and young adults accounted for 20% of all new HIV diagnoses in the United States.
The reality is many young people don’t have the information or tools to make the best choices when it comes to preventing HIV. Factors like low condom use, limited sexual health education, and challenges to accessing sexual health services all contribute to the rising rates of HIV among youth. These issues can include things like societal stigma and even fear of judgment when seeking care.
What Can You Do?
If you’re a young person or the parent of a young person, here are a few simple steps to take:
- Get Educated: Talk to our health providers about HIV prevention. Ask about safe sexual practices, the importance of condoms, and how to protect yourself and others. Learn about our PrEP and DoxyPEP options.
- Get Tested: HIV testing is a simple, quick process that can help you know your status. The earlier HIV is diagnosed, the easier it is to manage. Care Resource offers confidential testing, and it’s a vital part of taking care of your health.
- Use Protection: Condoms are still one of the best ways to prevent HIV and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs). It’s important to be proactive about using them, even if you’re in a committed relationship.
- Reach Out for Support: If you’re feeling unsure or confused, there are plenty of resources out there. Our health center offers confidential counseling and can connect you with programs designed to help you stay healthy and informed. Don’t be afraid to ask questions.
- Break the Stigma: Stigma is one of the biggest issues to accessing care. The more we talk openly about HIV, the less shame and fear people will feel when they need help. Be a part of the solution by showing support and empathy for those affected by HIV.
