A Simple, Step‑By‑Step Guide

Getting started with estate planning is easier than most people think. This page offers a deeper walkthrough of the process.

Step 1: Gather Essential Information

You’ll want to prepare:

  • Beneficiary names
  • Guardianship preferences
  • A list of major assets
  • Personal wishes for items or memorials
  • Who you’d like to handle your estate

This doesn’t need to be perfect. It just needs to begin.

Step 2: Use a Free Online Tool

With FreeWill, most people can create a simple, legally valid will in about 20 minutes. There is no cost or obligation and the FreeWill can be updated anytime.

Step 3: Talk With Loved Ones

Share your intentions to:

  • Reduce confusion
  • Prevent disputes
  • Help loved ones understand your wishes
  • Let them know where to find important documents

Communication is key.

Step 4: Review and Update Every 1–2 Years

Life changes. Your will should too.

Update after:

  • Marriage
  • Divorce
  • Birth of a child
  • New home
  • New account or insurance policy
  • Major life events

This keeps everything clear and accurate.

Step 5: Keep Documents Safe

Store your will and directives:

  • In a safe place
  • With a trusted person aware of its location
  • With digital access instructions if needed
