Understanding Colorectal Cancer: Early Detection Saves Lives

national colorectal weekIn recognition of National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month, Care Resource is providing colorectal cancer screening tests to eligible patients in March and throughout the year.

During this time, the South Florida community is encouraged to prioritize regular screenings as recommended by a healthcare provider, especially if over the age of 45 or have other risk factors.

An effective screening method is a colonoscopy, a procedure in which a doctor examines the inside of the colon. During a colonoscopy, any polyps found can be removed immediately, reducing the risk of cancer development. Other screening options include stool-based tests which can detect possible signs of colorectal cancer, and Cologuard®.

“This year, Care Resource is pleased to announce that we may equitably provide the Cologuard® colorectal cancer screening test to all our eligible patients. This test is performed in the comfort and privacy of your home with no trips to the doctor’s office. It is highly sensitive and has previously been available only to those with medical insurance. Please discuss the ColoGuard® with your provider on your next visit.” -Director of Medical Care Services, Douglas Steele

The American Cancer Society estimated that there may be 106,590 new cases of colon cancer, with 54,210 in men and 52,380 in women. Colorectal cancer is the third most diagnosed cancer and the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the United States.

Colorectal cancer is highly preventable and treatable with early detection and screening.
