Supporting Women’s Health Through Access to Care

Observing National Women’s Health Week (May 10-16, 2020)

The week May 10-16, 2020, serves as a reminder for women and girls, especially during the outbreak of COVID-19, to incorporate manageable steps and preventive and positive health behaviors into everyday life to prioritize and improve their health. It is extremely important for all women and girls, especially those with underlying health conditions, such as hypertension, diabetes, obesity, cardiovascular and respiratory conditions, and women 65 years and older, to take care of their health now.

Women’s healthcare at Care Resource includes basic gynecological care (provided by our in-house primary care providers), voluntary family planning, health education, routine pap smears and follow-up, breast cancer screening and referrals for specialty care services. Regular and specialized obstetrical care is provided through referrals.

According to Sheryl Zayas, DO, Medical Director with Care Resource, “Women have unique health issues. These include pregnancy, menopause, and conditions affecting the female organs. Some of the health issues that affect both men and women can present differently in women. For example, heart attacks more frequently present without chest pain. It is extremely important for women to have preventative care so that underlying health conditions do not go unrecognized. We believe our patients have a right to high quality care that is comprehensive, compassionate, and convenient. Our medical providers are prepared to address the health needs of women – from adolescence to menopause and beyond.”

Women are also encouraged take advantage of the health center’s behavioral health services. Women are more often the primary caregivers in families and can experience stress balancing their multiple roles: mother, employee, friend, etc. Consequently, while women may share many health concerns with men, they have unique healthcare needs. The health center’s behavioral health specialists come from different backgrounds including clinical social work, marriage and family counseling, and mental health. Experiences also range from client-centered supportive psychotherapy for addictions, cognitive behavioral counseling for depression, to assisted relaxation training and guided imagery for pain management or social anxiety.

Every women’s health journey is unique. It’s not always easy to take steps for better health. This National Women’s Health Week, make an appointment with Care Resource and find what works best for you.
