Miami (January 2019) -Care Resource is proud to announce Congresswoman Donna Shalala has been chosen to serve as the Master of Ceremonies for the 31st Annual AIDS Walk Miami 5K (3.1 miles) walk-a-thon fundraiser on Sunday, April 28, 2019, at SoundScape Park located at 400 17th Street in Miami Beach, FL.
Congresswoman Donna Shalala represents Florida’s 27th Congressional District. She served as the United States Secretary of Health and Human Services under President Bill Clinton, was the president of the University of Miami and President of the Clinton Foundation.

According to the Congresswoman, “It is an honor to serve as the Master of Ceremonies for AIDS Walk Miami on April 28 at Soundscape Park in Miami Beach. Advances in treatment and new prevention strategies have now made “Getting to Zero” – zero new infections, zero deaths, zero stigma – an achievable goal! Getting to zero still requires the efforts of everybody. Participation is critical to increasing awareness, fighting stigma, and raising funds to support the most vulnerable people living with HIV/AIDS in South Florida. Let’s make an impact together.”
HIV/AIDS continues to affect South Florida as a serious health issue. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), there are 44 new diagnosed cases for every 100,000 individuals living in our communities – that is 3 times the national average. At the end of 2017, there were 116,944 people with an HIV diagnosis living in Florida, and 4,949 new HIV diagnoses were made statewide.

Accoding to Steven Santiago, MD, Chief Medical Officer at Care Resource, “AIDS Walk Miami is South Florida’s oldest fundraising event in making an impact in the fight against HIV/AIDS. It funds supportive services at Care Resource designed to stabilize and empower clients living with or affected by HIV, including guiding our clients through our referral and monitoring programs, connecting them with HIV specialists in various fields of medicine, prevention education, transportation vouchers, food, rent, and utility assistance.”
Registration and opening ceremonies begin at 8:00 am and the Walk begins promptly at 9:00 am. The post-walk celebration begins at 9:30 am with a community health fair and a variety of activities for the entire family including free wellness screenings, HIV/STI testing, giveaways, a kids area and dozens of booths with information about available medical and support resources available to the community.
The fundraiser permits Care Resource and Food For Life Network, to continue providing impact and critical help to the 17,000+ individuals annually who depend on its essential services: primary medical and dental care, HIV and STI testing, case management, counseling, prevention education, housing, food and nutritional assistance, and much more.
