Care Resource is proud to celebrate the recognition of Thomas Smith, Ph.D., LMHC, LMFT, MCAP, Chief Behavioral Health Officer, and Sheryl Zayas, D.O., Medical Director and Primary Care Physician, who were honored by Mental Health America of Southeast Florida for their outstanding contributions to mental health and community wellness in South Florida. The recognition was presented during the organization’s 26th Annual EPIC Awards, which celebrate individuals whose leadership, advocacy, and service create meaningful change for vulnerable populations throughout the region.
The Exceptional People Impacting the Community (EPIC) Awards recognize leaders who demonstrate exceptional commitment to improving lives through innovation, service, and community impact. Dr. Smith and Dr. Zayas were selected for their leadership and dedication to expanding access to care, reducing health disparities, and improving outcomes for individuals experiencing substance use disorders and other behavioral health challenges.
Advancing Harm Reduction Through The SPOT
Among their many accomplishments, Dr. Smith and Dr. Zayas have helped champion The SPOT (Special Purpose Outreach Team) Mobile Medical Clinic, an innovative harm reduction program that brings healthcare services directly to individuals who may otherwise face barriers to care.
According to Mental Health America of Southeast Florida, the program has played a vital role in addressing the opioid crisis by providing syringe exchange services, health education, recovery support resources, and overdose prevention interventions. The initiative has also contributed to numerous overdose reversals through the distribution and use of Narcan.
By meeting people where they are, The SPOT helps connect individuals to life-saving healthcare services, including treatment and recovery resources, while fostering trust and engagement within underserved communities.
About The SPOT
The SPOT Mobile Medical Clinic is Broward County’s approved Syringe Services Program under the Florida Infectious Disease Elimination Act (IDEA). The program provides a broad range of services, including HIV, hepatitis C, and STI screening, primary healthcare services, overdose prevention support, and referrals to substance use treatment programs. Through partnerships and community outreach, The SPOT continues to expand access to compassionate, evidence-based care for individuals across Broward County.
