Honoring Black Experience, Wellness, and Resilience
During Black History Month, the health center commemorates and remembers the contributions and experiences of the African American community. Care Resource acts in support of patients and actively extends outreach and healthcare discussions into the communities wounded by the effects of HIV/AIDS. According to the CDC, “African Americans account for a higher proportion of new HIV diagnoses and people with HIV, compared to other races/ethnicities.
In 2018, African Americans accounted for 13% of the US population but 42% of the 37, 832 new HIV diagnoses in the US and dependent areas. While two-thirds of people who could potentially benefit from PrEP are African American or Latinx, they account for the smallest percentage of prescriptions to date.” These statistics call for additional community engagement, outreach, and accessible care. These barriers reveal the limitations of the healthcare system, and how they affect people of color.
This February, the health center joined other individuals and organizations across the nation in observing National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day (NBHAAD) in promoting HIV prevention, testing, treatment, and community involvement. Black History Month serves as a reminder of our mission to provide compassionate and competent care to our communities and to support them on their journeys of wellness and self-definition.
