On December 12, the Florida Department of Health in Miami-Dade County celebrated its annual “Test Miami” service awards. Care Resource, along with many other allied agencies that serve the community alongside the Department of Health were honored for achievements in testing, linkage to care and other services.
For the second year, Care Resource was awarded as the “Best PrEP Agency.” The award was given in recognition of the health center’s commitment and leadership in the use of biomedical prevention strategies to help diverse at-risk communities with ongoing access to PrEP. Through networking and referrals, Care Resource continues to help expand access and increase uptake of PrEP throughout the county. Through the combined efforts of these alliances, Care Resource has been at the forefront.
According to Paul Seligmann, Care Resource’s PrEP Coordinator, and a founding member of the Department of Health’s PrEP Workgroup, “Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis and Post-Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP) continues to be an exciting biomedical strategy to help prevent an HIV infection before it happens. The responsible use of these prevention methods in combination with safer sex practices can help bring about real change. Test Miami’s slogan is ‘Getting to Zero’ and PrEP is helping us get there.”
The “Test Miami” initiative is a collaborative effort between the Florida Department of Health and the Florida Department of Health in Miami-Dade County, community-based and faith-based organizations, health care providers, universities, city, county, state and national officials, as well as, concerned citizens that aim to end the HIV/AIDS epidemic, a major health threat for Miami-Dade County.
