A Commitment to HIV Prevention Through PrEP Education and Access

Among the most significant advances in HIV prevention has been the availability of Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP), a medication that can significantly reduce the risk of acquiring HIV when taken as prescribed.

For years, Care Resource has worked to expand access to HIV prevention services throughout South Florida. Through community partnerships, patient education, healthcare navigation, and comprehensive prevention programs, the organization has helped connect individuals to the tools and resources needed to protect their health.

Recognized for Leadership in HIV Prevention

In 2018, Care Resource was recognized by the Florida Department of Health in Miami-Dade County during its annual Test Miami service awards program. For the second consecutive year, the organization received recognition as a “Best PrEP Agency” for its commitment to expanding access to HIV prevention services and helping individuals connect to PrEP.

The recognition reflected Care Resource’s ongoing leadership in promoting evidence-based HIV prevention strategies and increasing awareness of available options within communities that may be at greater risk of HIV exposure.

What Is PrEP?

Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis, commonly known as PrEP, is a preventive medication that helps protect HIV-negative individuals from acquiring HIV. When taken as prescribed, PrEP is one of the most effective HIV prevention tools available.

PrEP is often combined with other prevention strategies, including:

  • Routine HIV testing
  • Sexual health education
  • Safer sex practices
  • Regular healthcare visits
  • Risk-reduction counseling

Together, these approaches help individuals make informed decisions about their health and well-being.

Expanding Access to Prevention Services

Access remains one of the most important components of successful HIV prevention efforts. Many individuals may be unaware of PrEP or face barriers that prevent them from obtaining preventive care.

Healthcare organizations can help address these challenges through:

  • Community outreach
  • Patient education
  • Healthcare navigation
  • Routine HIV screening
  • Affordable access to prevention services

By increasing awareness and reducing barriers, more individuals can access the prevention resources they need.

The Importance of Community Partnerships

HIV prevention is most effective when healthcare providers, public health agencies, community organizations, and advocates work together.

The Test Miami initiative brought together healthcare organizations, faith-based organizations, community groups, educational institutions, and public health leaders around a shared goal of reducing new HIV infections and improving access to prevention services.

These partnerships continue to play an important role in educating communities, expanding testing services, and connecting individuals to care.

Looking Ahead

Significant progress has been made in HIV prevention, but continued education, awareness, and access remain essential. PrEP, HIV testing, and community outreach efforts continue to help reduce new HIV infections and improve health outcomes across South Florida.

At Care Resource, we remain committed to expanding access to HIV prevention services, educating communities about available options, and helping individuals take an active role in their health. By working together, we can continue building healthier communities and moving closer to ending the HIV epidemic.
