An Ongoing Commitment to Assist Those Living With or Affected by HIV
Every year, the global community commemorates World AIDS Day on December 1. It is a time to honor those who have lost their lives to AIDS, communicate the ongoing commitment to assist those who are living with or at risk for HIV, and celebrate the caregivers, families, friends, and communities that support them.
On December 1, Care Resource is joining forces with the South Florida and international community. In collaboration with the Florida Department of Health in Miami-Dade County (FDOH), the World AIDS Museum and other local community partners, the health center is participating in an interactive World AIDS Day event at the Bakehouse Art Complex located at 561 NW 32nd Street in Miami from 6:00PM to 10:00PM. The event will showcase items from the World AIDS Museum such as the Faces of HIV exhibit, panels of the AIDS Memorial Quilt, educational materials from the 1980s and 1990s, and a program that feature discussions about how Miami-Dade County is responding to the HIV epidemic and listen to stories from those infected and affected by HIV. The event will conclude with a candlelight vigil.
For those that would like to submit art for this collaborative World AIDS Day event, the works submitted should feature condoms or be about the use of condoms. Works that include nudity or vulgarity will not be accepted. The works displayed at the Bakehouse Art Complex will not be for sale. However, selected works that will continue to be displayed at the Stephen P. Clark Government Center through December 15 will be for sale. On December 1, Care Resource is also offering free and confidential HIV testing through mobile testing units at several community locations. Free HIV testing also occurs at Care Resource’s Midtown Miami and Fort Lauderdale offices from 8:30am – 5:00pm. Care Resource offers free confidential HIV counseling and rapid testing to everyone, with priority given to pregnant or parenting women and anyone using injection drugs.
According to Steven Santiago, MD, Chief Medical Officer with Care Resource, “World AIDS Day highlights the historic opportunity we have to accelerate progress toward ending the HIV/AIDS epidemic as a public health threat in the United States and around the world. Although World AIDS Day is a great opportunity to talk about HIV, remember to keep the momentum going all-year-round.”

Take further to action in response to HIV. Here are some actions one can take:
• Get tested for HIV. Talk with your Care Resource health care provider about your risks for HIV.
• Talk with family, friends, and colleagues, about HIV prevention, about why this day matters to you and about HIV’s impact on your community.
• Provide support to people living with HIV/AIDS. Volunteer at Care Resource or a local service organization.
• Ask community leaders to increase their response to addressing the epidemic.
• Get involved with or host an event for the awareness day.
• Visit HIV.gov for information from the Federal government about HIV prevention, testing, treatment, research.
