6 Healthy Habits for Children: A Parent’s Guide to Wellness

Jan 18, 2022

Illustration of healthy habits for children, including sleep, hygiene, nutrition, exercise, vaccinations, and preventive healthcare.Parents and caregivers play an important role in helping children build healthy habits that can last a lifetime.

From proper sleep and nutrition to preventive healthcare and physical activity, small daily choices can support healthy growth and development.

Here are 6 simple ways to help your child stay healthy throughout the year.

1. Encourage healthy sleep habits
Sleep is essential for a child’s physical, emotional, and cognitive development. School-aged children generally need 9 to 12 hours of sleep each night. Consistent bedtimes and bedtime routines can help improve sleep quality and support better concentration, learning, and overall well-being.
2. Teach Good Handwashing and Hygiene
Proper handwashing is one of the simplest ways to reduce the spread of germs and illness. Encourage children to wash their hands thoroughly with soap and water, paying attention to their palms, fingers, nails, and wrists for at least 20 seconds.

Good hygiene habits learned early can provide lifelong benefits.

3. Stay Current on Vaccinations
Vaccinations help protect children from serious illnesses and contribute to healthier communities. Talk with your healthcare provider about recommended immunizations and annual vaccines that may be appropriate for your child’s age and health needs.

Preventive care can help reduce disruptions to school, activities, and family life.

4. Promote Healthy Eating and Hydration

Nutritious foods provide children with the energy and nutrients they need to grow and thrive. Encourage a balanced diet that includes fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and plenty of water throughout the day.

Building healthy eating habits early can support lifelong wellness.

5. Encourage Physical Activity
Regular exercise helps strengthen muscles and bones, supports heart health, and contributes to positive mental well-being. Whether through organized sports, outdoor play, biking, walking, or family activities, children should be encouraged to stay active every day.

Limiting recreational screen time can also help create more opportunities for movement.

6. Schedule Annual Wellness Exams
Routine checkups are an important part of preventive healthcare. Annual wellness visits allow healthcare providers to monitor growth and development, review vaccinations, discuss health concerns, and identify potential issues early.

Regular pediatric visits help ensure children stay healthy as they grow.
