Thomas Smith, Ph.D., LMHC, LMFT, MCAP Director of Behavioral Health Services

Biography

Dr. Smith is the Director of Behavioral Health Services for Broward and Miami-Dade counties at Care Resource (a 501 (c)(3) nonprofit organization and a Federally Qualified Health Center). He has been employed at Care Resource since 2009 when he joined the team as the Supervisor of Psychosocial Services and subsequently worked as a psychotherapist. Dr. Smith received his Ph.D. in counseling with a specialization in Marriage and Family Therapy and his MS in Marriage and Family Therapy and Mental Health Counseling from Barry University.

As a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, a Licensed Mental Health Counselor, and a Master’s Certified Addiction Professional, Dr. Smith has been fortunate to work in a variety of clinical settings with a diverse client population. Originally from Massachusetts, Dr. Smith has resided in Florida for 25 years and works for not-for-profit organizations providing services to the under or uninsured population. Dr. Smith’s passion is working with the Gay and Lesbian, Transgender, and HIV/AIDS population on an individual, couple, group, or family basis.

As a Clinical Fellow of the American Association of Marriage and Family Therapy, Dr. Smith has conducted qualitative research on navigating life in long-term relationships with gay couples. He has been able to share his passion to educate students entering the Marriage and Family Therapy and Mental Health Counseling profession as a result of being an Adjunct Professor at Nova Southeastern University, at the Center of Psychological Studies at the Broward, Palm Beach, and Hillsborough County campuses. In addition, he has been an Adjunct Professor at Barry University in Miami-Dade County for the Graduate Marriage and Family and Mental Health Counseling Program. These teaching appointments have enabled Dr. Smith to bring his experience working with a diverse population to the next generation of mental health professionals.
