Sexual Health Awareness Month: Let’s Talk about Sex!

A couple smiling at each otherIt’s time to start having those hard conversations—yes, even the uncomfortable ones. September is Sexual Health Awareness Month. Whether it’s with your partner, healthcare provider, or your children, open dialogue about sexual health is essential for well-being and prevention. These conversations open communication about the importance of safeguarding our overall health while destigmatizing and demystifying this crucial topic.

Talking openly with your partner about sexual health fosters trust and strengthens your relationship. Discussing STIs, birth control, and boundaries can prevent misunderstandings and promote safer practices.

Remember, communication is key to ensuring both partners feel respected and informed.

More often than not, simply having knowledge about sexual health can help alleviate stigma and normalize the experiences we all share. By opening dialogues about sexual health with our loved ones through open and honest conversations, we can promote a culture of understanding and acceptance. – Jackisha Fanfan, Health Promotion and Marketing Associate

As of March 2024, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that 46% of new STIs in the United States occur in individuals aged 15 to 24. This age group remains particularly vulnerable due to factors like a lack of awareness about testing and safer sex practices.

Although having these conversations can feel awkward, it’s important that we make the effort to safeguard our youth.

Starting conversations about sexual health early can empower youth to make informed choices as they grow up. Age-appropriate discussions about anatomy, consent, and healthy relationships lay the groundwork for responsible decision-making later. Encourage questions and create a safe space for dialogue—they’ll thank you for it in the long run.

Your healthcare provider is there to help navigate your sexual health journey. From STI testing and contraception options to sexual dysfunction concerns, don’t hesitate to ask questions.

Regular screenings are crucial—especially since statistics show that STIs are on the rise across different age groups.

According to the CDC, in 2023, STI cases among those aged 55–64 increased by 16.2%, while the 35–44 age group saw an 8.6% rise, and the 45–54 age group had a 7.6% increase. These numbers underscore the importance of staying informed and proactive about sexual health at every stage of life.

By embracing open and honest discussions about sexual health, we not only break down stigma but also empower ourselves and our loved ones to lead healthier lives. This Sexual Health Awareness Month, let’s commit to having the conversations that matter—for a safer, more informed future.
