CDC Updates Eligibility for COVID-19 Vaccines and Booster Shots

CDC Approves 5-11 YO vaccinationsThe CDC has made recommendations for everyone ages 5 and older to get a COVID-19 vaccine to help protect against COVID-19. Children ages 5 years and older are able to get an age-appropriate dose of Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine.

Care Resource is providing the COVID-19 vaccine free of charge to all people, regardless of their immigration or health insurance status. This now includes vaccinations for children ages 5 and older.

The CDC has also recently expanded eligibility for COVID-19 booster shots. The Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) authorization and CDC’s recommendation for use are important steps forward as we work to stay ahead of the virus and keep Americans safe.

For individuals who received a Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna COVID-19 vaccine, the following groups are eligible for a booster shot at 6 months or more after their initial series:

  • 65 years and older
  • Age 18+ who live in long-term care settings
  • Age 18+ who have underlying medical conditions
  • Age 18+ who work or live in high-risk settings

Booster Shots are also recommended for those who got the Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine and are 18 and older and who were vaccinated two or more months ago.

The CDC’s new recommendations now allow “mix and match” dosing for booster shots. Eligible individuals may choose which vaccine they receive as a booster dose. This allows you to obtain a different COVID-19 vaccine type than you originally obtained.

Newly eligible individuals who receive a booster shot will benefit from additional protection against COVID-19. Current studies show that all three of the COVID-19 vaccines approved or authorized in the United States continue to be highly effective in reducing the risk of severe disease, hospitalization, and death, even against the widely circulating Delta variant.

Care Resource is offering booster shots to eligible individuals by walk-in and appointment at any of our health centers in Miami-Dade and Broward counties. A doctor’s note, prescription or proof of medical condition is not required.
