Breast Cancer Awareness Month: 5 Essential Tips to Prioritize Your Health

Breast Cancer Awareness

Tips for staying on top of your breast health and screenings

October marks Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a dedicated time to raise awareness about breast cancer and the critical importance of early detection.

This year let’s focus on empowerment by equipping ourselves and our loved ones with the knowledge and proactive steps that can make all the difference. Early detection and healthy choices save lives, so let’s commit to prioritizing our health this October and beyond.

Here are five essential tips for staying on top of your breast health and screenings:

  1. Schedule Regular Mammograms
Regular mammograms are one of the most effective ways to detect breast cancer early, often before symptoms appear. The American Cancer Society recommends annual screenings starting at age 40, or earlier if you have a family history of breast cancer or other risk factors. Care Resource provides accessible screening options to help you stay on track with your health.
  2. Know Your Risk Factors
Understanding your personal risk factors is a critical step in proactive health management. Risk factors can include family history, genetic predispositions (such as BRCA1 and BRCA2 mutations), age, and lifestyle choices. Discuss your risk profile with your healthcare provider and develop a personalized screening plan that fits your needs.
  3. Perform Monthly Self-Exams
Get to know your body. Monthly self-exams can help you detect changes early. The ideal time to perform a self-exam is about a week after your period, when your breasts are less likely to be swollen or tender. Be on the lookout for any lumps, unusual textures, changes in size, or skin alterations. If anything seems out of the ordinary, consult your healthcare provider right away.
  4. Maintain a Healthy Lifestyle
Your daily choices can have a lasting impact on your breast health. Aim for a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, and engage in regular exercise—at least 150 minutes of moderate aerobic activity each week. Limiting alcohol consumption and avoiding tobacco are also key steps in reducing your overall cancer risk.
  5. Stay Informed and Advocate for Your Health
Empower yourself by staying informed about breast cancer research, the latest advancements in treatment, and evolving screening guidelines. Never hesitate to ask questions or seek second opinions when it comes to your health. Be your own advocate and encourage the people in your life to do the same.
