How Planned Gifts Are Used

Your gift will be used at the discretion of the Board of Directors for the highest priorities of the organization. If you wish to restrict your gift to a specific project or program, please consult with Care Resource’s Development staff.  You may make your gift in your name, or you may memorialize a loved one with your contribution.

Types of Planned Gifts

Many people choose to include their charitable interests in their long-range estate planning. There are many ways to preserve the financial security of oneself and loved ones while also providing for charitable gifts. Examples of planned gifts include:

Bequests or Living Trusts

Bequests offer one of the simplest ways to make a gift to Care Resource and create a personal legacy of a commitment to our community’s medically underserved. Bequests are gifts made through a will or living trust and are especially popular for people who want to make a gift of significant size but who cannot give up income or capital during their lifetime. Gifts by will or living trusts may be for a set dollar amount, a percentage of the total estate, or the residual amount (funds leftover after all expenses have been paid). This future gift is revocable, and you retain control of the assets to meet future needs. Bequests of all sizes benefit Care Resource.

We’ve partnered with FreeWill: a free online resource you can use to create a legally valid will and make a gift to us, building a legacy committed to accessible healthcare for all. It only takes 20 minutes or less to make or update your plans. Click here to get started now.

If you prefer to complete your plans manually, you can reference the sample bequest language below:

Charitable Trusts and Gift Annuities

A charitable trust can provide income for you and/or your spouse while you are living. Thereafter, Care Resource can be named to receive the remainder of the assets. Other charities can be named as principal recipients as well.

A charitable gift annuity is the gift that gives back. It provides a way to make a gift to your favorite charity and still receive an income for yourself or others. By giving a lump sum (usually $10,000 or more) to Care Resource, you can receive an annual fixed percentage rate of return for life. It’s as easy as a bank CD, and it supports Care Resource while providing a guaranteed rate of return.

Checking Accounts, Savings Accounts, CDs

By filling out a simple form at your financial institution you can designate Care Resource to receive the remaining funds in any of these accounts after you’re gone.

Life Insurance

Many individuals have life insurance policies whose benefits they no longer need. If this applies to you, you may want to consider naming the Care Resource as the beneficiary and assigning it ownership of the policy. In doing so, you will receive a charitable deduction; and in removing the life insurance policy from your estate, you may also reduce your estate taxes.  A gift of a current policy may also enable the donor to turn a monthly premium into a tax-free charitable gift. Care Resource can also be included as a beneficiary of a policy.

Retirement Plans

If you plan to make a legacy gift to the Care Resource, you may want to consider naming the club as the beneficiary of your 401(k), pension, or other retirement plan, and leaving other assets to your family. Retirement plan assets (IRAs, 401(k), 403(b), etc.) offer another easy method for planned giving. The funds can be transferred at death to Care Resource by naming Care Resource as either the primary or contingent beneficiary of the account.

As these funds are not distributed until your passing, they are not subject to estate tax or income tax, thus the entire balance passes to Care Resource.  When passed on to heirs, retirement plans can incur as much as 70 percent in taxes, because this asset faces double taxation. Naming Care Resource as the primary beneficiary avoids all income and estate taxes on the retirement plan.  Of course, you can also name the Care Resource for a percentage portion of the assets, or as a contingent beneficiary, with the gift to be effective only after the death of a spouse or other family member.  To make a gift of your retirement plan, simply contact your plan manager, ask for a change of beneficiary form.
