A conference specially designed for medical practices, social service agencies, and front line workers.
Miami (February 2019) – On Tuesday, March 12, 2019, the South Florida Transgender Medical Conference organized a training day for those who assist transgender patients. The training day was made possible with the support of organizations including Care Resource, SunServe, The Pride Center at Equality Park, Holy Cross Hospital, and Poverello.
According to Hugo Rocchia, LCSW, Behavioral Health Services Manager with Care Resource, “Conferences like this ensure that transgender individuals receive proper care. Care Resource’s goal is to provide quality, compassionate, and informed care for our transgender patients. We serve transgender people and people at various places on the spectrum of gender identity and expression. We are committed to delivering health care in our region and we proudly work together with our transgender community to lead the way in eliminating barriers to care.”
The sessions allowed participants to gain a deeper understanding about how gender can guide one’s life., to hear from members of the transgender community across the age spectrum, understand the experiences of transgender clients and patients, and gain insight into ways to make facilities more welcoming and competent.
The event included:
- A community panel that includes a transgender woman, a transgender man, a member of the community who identifies as non-binary, and a parent of a trans child.
- Reenactments of experiences that transgender persons may often face in a health care setting along with discussion, and the application of appropriate responses.
- Sessions about gender and the evolution of standards of care from the World Professional Association for Transgender Health (WPATH).
