Influenza 2020-2021 Frequently Asked Questions

Influenza season is here and protecting yourself and your loved ones is vital.

Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, reducing the spread of respiratory illnesses, like flu, this fall and winter is more important than ever. Receiving a flu vaccine can reduce flu illnesses, doctors’ visits, missing work and school, as well as prevent flu-related hospitalizations and deaths. Our goal at Care Resource is to ensure the safety of all staff, patients, and clients as we are committed to your health. Below you will find information as it relates to this flu season.

What is the difference between Influenza (Flu) and COVID-19?
Influenza (Flu) and COVID-19 are both contagious respiratory illnesses, but they are caused by different viruses. COVID-19 is caused by infection with a new coronavirus (called SARS-CoV-2) and flu is caused by infection with influenza viruses. Many different respiratory viruses can cause the common cold, but rhinoviruses are the most common. Because some of the symptoms of the common cold, flu and COVID-19 are similar, it may be hard to tell the difference between them based on symptoms alone, and testing may be needed to help confirm a diagnosis. Please visit CDC.gov for further information.

If COVID-19 is spreading in my community, should I still go out to get a flu vaccine?
Yes. Getting a flu vaccine is an essential part of protecting your health and your family’s health this season. To protect your health when getting a flu vaccine, follow CDC’s recommendations for running essential errands and doctor visits.

Should a flu vaccine be given to someone with suspected or confirmed COVID-19?
Vaccination should be deferred (postponed) for people with suspected or confirmed COVID-19, regardless of whether they have symptoms, until they have met the criteria to discontinue their isolation. When scheduling or confirming appointments for vaccination, patients should notify the provider’s office or clinic in advance if they currently have or develop any symptoms of COVID-19.

What is Care Resource doing to help prevent the transmission of the flu?
Care Resource is implementing the vaccination of all staff that are working on site, as well as staff that are working remotely. Staff are enforcing infection control measures, such as frequent hand washing, disinfecting work areas, and wearing appropriate PPE (personal protective equipment) while on site in adherence to CDC, Joint Commission, and OSHA standards and guidelines.

Vaccinations will be offered to all Care Resource patients as it has been throughout the years. Please call in advance to set up an appointment to receive your flu vaccine at any of our Care Resource locations.

What are some ways I can help prevent the spread of the flu?

  • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds especially after you have been in a public place, or after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing. If soap and water are not readily available, use a hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol.
  • Avoid close contact with people who are sick, and stay home if you are not feeling well.
  • Always cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze or use the inside of your elbow. Remember to wash your hands immediately after.
  • Clean AND disinfect frequently touched surfaces daily. This includes tables, doorknobs, light switches, counter-tops, handles, desks, phones, keyboards, toilets, faucets, and sinks.

Remember, your health and safety is a priority. If you have any questions or concerns contact your Primary Care Provider or visit CDC.gov
